Background

As working as a software engineer for 8 years, I’ve purchased and threw out tons of desk items to make the best work environment. In this article, I just want to share TOP 5 Unique Desk Items you must have if you are a software engineer or sit at the desk all day.

Let’s Get Started

#1 Mini Vacuum Cleaner

I am a believer of the concept: Clean Desk drives Clean Code.

“Clean Desk drives Clean Code.”

I used to clean the desk every other day or on Friday by picking up the debris (dirty particles) and then swiping the area with disinfectant wipes. However, sometimes I got lazy and left the debris and it got stuck on the desk or they are too many/dirty to pick up.

NOW, this Mini Vacuum Cleaner can solve the issue. It is always on my desk and you can easily clean your desk without moving yourself around.

PROs:

  • Easy to Reach & Use+++
  • Pick up most types of debris
  • Wireless

CONs:

  • Still need to clean out the vacuum once a month
  • Cannot pick up liquid

#2 Coffee Warmer

As a coffee lover, this is my TOP 1 desk item. This device warms my coffee at least 1–2 more hours so I can enjoy the taste. Also, you can warm tea or water as long as you put it in the mug.

One special feature for this item is that the power turns ON only when there is an object on the device. I used two other brands but returned them because of the safety reason.

One time, I put my AirPods on the device and it gets turned on accidentally. My theory is that since the power button was touch-based and there was a water droplet which triggers the power to be ON 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I tested putting the AirPods and tried to turn on the power but it did not turn ON. So if you like the coffee, tea, or water to be warm longer, you must have this!

PRO:

  • Keep Drink Warm longer
  • Get Focus longer

CON:

  • Safety Concern (burning)
  • Wired

#3 Hand Gripper

I tend to get stressed out easily and I need a way to relieve stress time to time. I’ve purchased many types of the stress reliever toys: Stress Ball, Silicon Pop, fidget and you name it 😂

But I really think the Hand Gripper is the Best Stress Reliever. Because if you choose the right level of the Hand Gripper for you, you get really focused on each reps of gripping and it enhances the mental health. Also, if you are unhappy with someone, think that the hand gripper is that person’s hand and imagine you are squeezing his hand as hard as possible 🤪

PRO:

  • Stress Relieve Easily
  • Gain Grip Strength & Muscle
  • Increase Focus
  • Portable

CON:

  • No need if you don’t get stressed out

#4 Foot Massager

Every morning and evening, the first thing I do when I sit on the chair is: running the foot massager.

This is supposed to help your blood circulation better when you are sitting at the desk. I feel that drives boosting my energy for coding, writing, reading, and watching (youtube 😝). But seriously! As an Asian, I know our ancients believe that body will have a problem if there is a problem with their feet.

But seriously! As an Asian, I know our ancients believe that body will have a problem if there is a problem with their feet.

Also, it escalate the level of your leg position if you have a short calves 🥲

PRO

  • Helps Blood Circulation & Focus
  • Escalate the Leg Position

CON

  • Noisy (not suitable when you are speaking in the meeting)
  • Bulky

#5 Wrist Pads for Keyboard

I know lots of people now have the wrist pad for the mouse. However, I think the Wrist Pad for Keyboard is also essential especially if you are typing (coding) a lot. This will prevent any injury for your both wrists.

PRO:

  • Prevent Wrist Injury (Best asset for Engineers)

Conclusion

I know that my work environment is not the best in the world and I still want to purchase lots of new cool desk items but I tend to hold my desire to purchase at least for a week to think if I really need it nowadays.

How about your work environment? Is there an essential desk item that you want to recommend or I am missing? Please let me know in the comment 🙌
